Swimming Pool Winterization

Swimming Pool Winterization  - why it is important & how to do it

Winterizing your pool is important for many reasons, the first being that it helps prevent your pool components from being damaged or compromised by freezing water. When water freezes, it expands which can cause pipes to crack or warp.

Winterization involves taking various steps to ensure you both protect your pool from the winter elements as well as making your life easy when you come to start your pool up again in the spring.

The first thing you must do is clean out any leaves and debris using a pool vacuum or net.

You must then balance your pool waters chemistry using chemicals such as chlorine shock, ph plus and ph minus. It is also advised that you use a long life algicide which often lasts up to 6 months. This will help prevent a build up of algae over the winter period.

Then, you need to remove your skimmer baskets, wall fittings, cleaners, solar blankets, ladders etc from the pool and then lower the water level to below your skimmer mouth.

You must then completely drain all pump systems, filtration systems, heating and chlorinating equipment and clean them. It is also advised that you lubricate your pipe and components using PVC lubrication. Doing so will ensure that frozen water does not crack your pool pipe as well as protecting your pool from the elements.

The last step you must take is to use a winter debris cover which will keep out debris such as leafs from accumulating in your pool.
